Gold Q&A: Answers to our Subscribers' Most Pressing Questions

  • Did you design your sample precious metals portfolios with any particular rate of return in mind?

    October 12, 2012, 12:00 PM

I have just gone through your essay on portfolio structuring. Did you have some idea in mind as to a rate of return these portfolios were designed to achieve? Or was your idea to try to balance risk/reward and let the return find its own level? I am not at all criticizing your approach here, but I would like to better understand the reasoning behind it.

  • Do you agree that trading in gold may be banned?

    December 20, 2008, 12:00 PM

According to Richard Russell of Dow Theory the Fed may ban all trading in gold. Do you agree?

  • Do you feel that the Canadian, US, and Australian stock markets will survive?

    August 4, 2010, 12:00 PM

I have been asking this question of other writers and advisors and would appreciate your courtesy of a reply.

I'm an investor of BOTH paper PM stocks and physical PM. Paper for the great leverage to the price of silver. Physical silver for bartering and survival. I have been asking learned advisors such as yourself this question and would be very interested in your opinion: Do you feel the Canadian, US and Australian stock markets will survive as a viable marketplace for trading paper precious metal stocks? Or do you feel that the financial systems are so fragile now that you are advising your clients only to purchase physical precious metals?

  • Do you look at pre- and after-market volumes of precious metals?

    November 9, 2012, 12:00 PM

Given that volume is an important indicator, I was wondering:

    1. Do you look at pre-market and/or after-market volumes at all?
    2. If so, what use do you make of those numbers?

I tend to look at these regularly, and noted today that the after-market volume in GDX was considerable. It left me wondering whether you include those numbers in your daily assessment of volume.

  • Do you really have to give us various gold and silver signals?

    October 12, 2012, 12:00 PM

I can appreciate your thoughts about creating trades based on various signals. However I, for one, have no interest in trying to integrate signals from a single source, i.e. Sunshine Profits. When I read a summary update or a market alert, which of course contains your analysis and conclusions, I don't then want to have to review other Sunshine indicators to see what they say. I expect you will do that as part of your analysis, because, after all, who is better qualified? Just like with the various charts and graphs, we don't just want to read you say 'buy' or 'sell' without reviewing the data, but, in the end, we do want the 'buy or sell' opinion. There is no shortage of free data (and opinion, for that matter) all over the Internet. It is the skillful integration and analysis of this data that is valuable.

  • Do you recommend 30-60% of total assets be held in silver?

    October 12, 2012, 12:00 PM

I have finished digesting your article on portfolio structure, which is quite interesting. I am eager to see your Portfolio Assistant in operation.

As far as holding physical metals, it appears that you recommend 30-60% of total physical assets held be in silver. Is that correct?

  • Do you suggest GLD and SLV for opening speculative long positions?

    September 2, 2011, 12:00 PM

When you recommend going long in a speculative position do you recommend doing it with GLD and SLV? Do you recommend leveraging such as buying contracts or margin? Should I be margining SLV or buying gold contracts? I am constantly reading about gold and silver prices dropping after margin requirements are changed. I understand a great deal more money can be made leveraging when it is certain that the bull will run. Please let me know what I should obtain and where I should obtain it.

  • Do you use the Hindenburg Omen in your analysis?

    January 21, 2011, 12:00 PM

On a couple of occasions you mention the Hindenburg Omen. Do you think it’s useful for precious metals investors? If so, do you include it in your analysis?
