There it is. Mt. Gox has disappeared. Quite literally when it comes to the exchanges website – all it features currently is an empty space. On Mt. Gox the price recovered over the weekend from Friday’s close at $111.40 to $310.00 at the end of day on Sunday. Overall, the price nearily tripled (!) over the weekend. The volume was relatively substantial on Friday and Saturday to be halved on Sunday. Does this change anything for the other major exchanges? How about the moves today? Yesterday was probably the wildest session on Mt. Gox since Dec. 18. The price ranged from $220.29 to $540 on relatively heavy volume. You don’t really get much more evidence that Bitcoin is still a very young market and the periods when the price is on the same level for a given time are intertwined with days of crazy trading. The currency was 19.2% down for the day.

The news of the day is probably the denial of service attack carried out on major Bitcoin exchanges: Bitstamp and BTC-e. They have both announced they would experience the same kind of problems that earlier hit Mt. Gox.

Bitcoin lost 11.7% yesterday on Mt. Gox compared with the previous day’s close. The volume was substantial (at least compared with what we saw in January). This was the highest volume, and also the deepest correction, since Friday.
There was no reversal yesterday but today feels a lot different. Bitcoin is still 1.8% down for the day but the trading has somewhat stabilized. Is the situation different enough for us to consider any positions? Read more on that in the alert.

On Friday, the volume on Mt. Gox exploded to ฿49,457.28, more than double what we had seen the day before. Bitcoin was sold off heavily, losing 16% in just a day. Our stop-loss was hit at $800, before most of the day’s decline materialized.

Bitcoin dropped 2.3% yesterday on Mt. Gox. The decline was slightly bigger than what we had seen in previous days but not strong in its own right. Additionally, the small volume didn’t impart any sense of momentum.

One of the leading Chinese Bitcoin exchanges, BTC China, came back to offering its customers bitcoins in exchange for deposits in yuan. This is a reversal of a previous decision which followed the Chinese central bank’s memo advising domestic financial institution not to deal in Bitcoin.

Yesterday, not much changed after our alert was published. Bitcoin barely moved throughout the day, ending it 0.7% lower than at the previous close. Benjamin Lawsky, New York State's first Superintendent of Financial Services, expressed the possibility of regulating Bitcoin under what he termed "BitLicense." This is an indication that the regulator is moving toward a framework for handling digital currencies.

Charlie Shrem, the CEO of BitInstant, was arrested on Sunday on charges of money laundering. Shrem and Robert Faiella, a Bitcoin trader known under the nickname of BTCKing are alleged to have attempted to sell $1 million worth of bitcoins to Silk Road users.

Yesterday, a Bitcoin enthusiast posted on reddit the e-mail conversation he'd had with several Google employees, including two Senior Vice Presidents at the company. The discussion sheds some light on what Google's stance on Bitcoin is.

Is Bitcoin art? You could call it art in the technical sense as it might be a leap forward in payment methods but does it have the characteristics of an actual piece of art, like a painting, or a collector's item, like post stamps? In a slightly funny turn of events, the Swedish regulator is set to qualify bitcoins as "other assets", a cathegory which includes jewelry or antiques.
Bitcoin barely moved yesterday on Mt. Gox and today there hardly seems to be any downward pressure with only 1,332.80 bitcoins changing wallets up to this point. The University of Cumbria in the UK will become the first public tertiary education institution to accept tuition in bitcoins. From this summer, students will be able to spend their bitcoins on two courses on complementary currencies.
Yesterday, Bitcoin edged 0.1% up on the heaviest volume since Jan. 11. But in spite of the surge in volume, the move itself didn’t have significant power and today the volume has been shaping up lower than yesterday. Does this make us bearish in any way? This alert answers this question.

Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC, a UK agency responsible for collecting taxes) is set to review its guidelines on Bitcoin. This follows last week’s news that Bitcoin would be sold on eBay UK, beginning Feb. 10.

The Canadian government has expressed its views on Bitcoin - it doesn't consider it legal tender in the country. On the other hand, the spokesman for the Bank of Canada expressed a possibility of Bitcoin developing as an alternative to payment processors.

The Chinese central bank had addresses Bitcoin during a press conference, saying it didn't want to "suppress or discriminate against Bitcoin" but it thought Bitcoin was "not a currency." This might be seen as a softening of the authorities’ stance on Bitcoin in China but actual rules remain to be announced.
